FSSAI to operationalise additive provisions under ’16, ’17 notifications

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has decided to operationalise the additive provisions under the draft regulations for additional additives/standards notifications of 2016 and 2017.
These drafts comprised the revised list of additives which were missing from the original notification, published in the Gazette of India No 11/09/Reg/Harmonisation/2014 published on September 5, 2016.
The direction issued by the country’s apex food regulator stated that the gazette regulation of September 2016 led to the inadvertent deletion of certain food additives which were being used by the food business operators (FBOs).
Later, FSSAI approved three separate amendment regulations with revised provisions for use of food additives in various food categories.
The date for the compliance with the gazette regulation was kept at July 31, 2017 and extended to December 31.
But since FSSAI was unable to draft a final draft regulations within this time frame to include all the missing additives, the apex regulator decided to operationalise these additive provisions made in the amended drafts of 2016 and 2017, till the final notification of the amendment regulations were made.
According to experts, a more detailed mention of product type and its processed kind is mentioned in the Standards for Food Additives.
For instance, instead of simple jaggery, it now includes the source of the jaggery, like palm jaggery, cane jaggery and so on.
Such details become important for the FBOs to understand which source to use to make a particular additive/ingredient. There are also mentions of the permissible limits for certain additives.
According to FSSAI, it will give a clear picture to the FBOs with respect to using the ingredients and their sources. The comments from FBOs and stakeholders have now been incorporated, and the food industry should soon be getting a final notification in this regard.
